US News & World Report published its 2009 rankings of National Universities. USC came in at 27th, same as last year but untied with any other university (we were tied for 27th last year).
I compiled average rankings for each conference using US News rankings:
- Ind: 22.7
1. ACC: 48.3
2. Big Ten: 50.1
3. Pac-10: 72.3
4. Big 12: 99.4
5. SEC: 101.6
6. Big East: 112.1
7. MWC: 143.0
8. C-USA: 154.1
9. MAC: 174.1
10. WAC: 199.6
11. Sun Belt: 228.0
Why is this relevant to college sports? If anything it has a lot to do with admission and maintaining eligibility of athletes to various programs (especially important with basketball and football). It's good to see Pac-10 in the top-3 (not including Independents).
Here are the complete rankings for each conference (I assumed Air Force is top-25, used mid-point for Tier-3 and Tier-4 schools which don't have any numerical ratings, and for unranked schools used peer ranking [for example Eastern Michigan is assigned similar rankings as Western Michigan] )
