There Goes Beckham
No, not David…
USC Baseball takes another hit. This kid is real good player, it’s a shame that we couldn’t keep him. From MLB.com
Tim Beckham is No. 1.
The Rays, holding the first overall selection in Thursday's First-Year Player Draft, selected the talented high school shortstop from Griffin, Ga.
[…]Beckham has signed a baseball scholarship to Southern California but wants to play professional baseball. The Rays would like to get him signed as soon as possible and into their system so he can progress as rapidly as possible to the Major Leagues.
I give Chad Kreuter credit for going after top talent but this is the second year in a row that SC has lost a top recruit to MLB. I sure hope he has a back up plan and some other quality players coming in.

Now if only...
getting a hit had been as common for the team this year.

Being a college baseball coach sounds brutal these days with the scholarship limitations, and of course, the no age limit MLB draft. I know Kreuter is under fire, but he must be doing something right as evidenced by some big-time HS commits…...that elect to go pro instead. I’m definitely willing to give him 2 more seasons to turn it around. In this atmosphere, the power teams in baseball seem to turn over frequently.

Beckham committed to USC
without even getting an offer from the school. Not a single person thought Beckham would ever show up on a campus and he was barely recruited. Kreuter figured that it couldn’t be bad to have the best high school player in the country, but in no way did USC take a hit here.

That's over simplified
why did Beckham “pick” SC in the first place? He’s from GA so he could have easily picked Vandy. what was the allure of coming 3000 miles to SC. I’m not buying into the tradition argument.
It may not have been bad to have Beckham come to SC but Beckham not coming does hurt SC’s image in that they can’t close the deal. I would agree that Beckham is a special case in his being picked first in the draft but it would be nice to see Kreuter get one of these guys to stay.
