Jennings to play in Europe?
Former USC recruit and current Arizona commit Brandon Jennings may play in Europe if his last series of tests fail to meet NCAA qualification standards.
The nation's top point guard recruit told ESPN.com he "still wants to go to Arizona, but if things don't go right, I'm considering going overseas."
"Either (option) is good for me," Jennings told the Web site. "I just think I would develop more if I went overseas and I would have played pro ball for a year. But if I went to Arizona, we would have a good team because Chase (Budinger) is coming back."
But would Europe take him? If I am a European coach I wouldn’t want this kid if he is only going to stay one year and then go back to the NBA. Why should the European league be a surrogate for the NBA.
Putting aside the tragedy of Jennings possibly not being able to qualify (that’s whole other conversation) this why one year mandatory rule is a bad idea. The NBA really could make something of a good move here if they adopted a rule that made players who forego college play at least one year in D-league instead of possibly losing them to Europe or worse doing nothing while watching the time whittle away. I’m still not sure if all rookies should play a year in D-league but this could be a way to keep the OJ Mayo type of situations away from college programs while also giving the NBA what it wants by having a more mature and polished product.
It’s a shame that this kid can’t seem to make the grades and I realize that this is the fault of Jennings and his support system. I just think the NBA could do some good here if they made the proper effort.

I wonder if other high school players will opt out of college basketball and go to Europe to play to develop their skills and earn some cash on the side. I can also see how young talent might appeal to European coaches (even if it might be for only one year) as many of the best players overseas are leaving their respective countries and professional basketball leagues for the NBA.
