Wazzu looses Six Schollies

Ouch...that's going to hurt.

Due to a poor Academic Performance Rate, the NCAA is ready to levy sanctions against the WSU football team, Jim Sterk and Paul Wulff said on Thursday.

The APR, which is a compilation of statistics on graduation rates for Division I teams, was created in 2005 as a way to punish athletic programs that fail to graduate approximately 50 percent of their players. In WSU's case, attrition during the Bill Doba era could potentially haunt the Cougars for the next few seasons.

"When I got the job we knew we were going to take a hit this upcoming year," Wulff said. "We have to go in with a mindset that this next year we're going to play with 79 instead of 85."

Good luck with that!

lost scholarships
Wazzu got hit hard by kids transferring and dropping out. It's a by-product of taking so many JUCOs and high risk kids these last few years. Doba was feeling the heat and wanted to get back to the "dynasty" years so he rolled the dice...seven out.

Another point that validates. . .
. . .CC's take on athletes staying for their full 4 years!

If PC recruits, or Coach Floyd for that matter, student/athletes, halfway (or fully) knowing that their time in USC uniforms might be short- it could have harmful affects as to our APR (for each respective sport).

I witnessed firsthand the "scholarship" polemic between Roll Bama Roll and Maize and Blue this past winter. It was intense and harsh! Better not good to go down that road. Is all.

{meant to say}
It's better to not go down that road, instead of the boneheaded sentence I actually put down from above. Duh, hickey! (my hand! did I tell you guys about my hand? :)

APR vs Grad rate
I thought the APR measured more than just flat grad rates (which can be affected by athletes leaving early), and so was more indicative of actual "student" athlete performance and less prone to artificial skewing.

If that's the case, it seems that there are way more problems in Wazzu than just a few kids leaving for the NFL early, and definitely an indictment of the whole academic morass up there.  Cal has had a number of JuCo transfers since Tedford came on board, but their 2006 APR is 965 (compared to 931 for Fucla, 947 for SC, and 984 for Furd).

Obviously there is way more going on than JuCo transfers and early departures.

Wazzu
It is more than just having a lot of Jucos. The Coogs took a lot of high risk kids, both from high school and JCs. These kids flunked out and/or left the program at a much higher rate than other schools. Remember Doba was one of the few coaches who didn't pull Randy Estes scholarship offer after he got busted selling pot. While he never made it into school, it does tell you the types of risks WSU was willing to go to in order to climb back up the mountain.
