USC Sweeps FIU

After racking up 16 runs in the season opener SC proceeded to win game 2 9-3 and game 3 12-7.

Highlights from Game 2

Sophomore Hector Rabago (Riverside/Poly HS), filling in for injured shortstop Grant Green, went 3-for-4 with two home runs and a triple Saturday as the USC Trojans defeated the Florida International Golden Panthers, 9-3. USC improved to 2-0 on the season after hitting four solo home runs in the game for a total of seven in two games after the Trojans hit just 25 home runs all of last season.

Green's streak of 57 games as the Trojans' starting shortstop was snapped after a strained back muscle knocked him out of last night's game and is day-to-day.

Junior right-hander Ryan Cook (Clovis/Clovis HS) threw six solid innings, allowing only three runs (two earned) on eight hits in his first start of the season. Anthony Vasquez, Kevin Couture and Robert Stock combined with three scoreless innings to close out the game.

Highlights from Game 3

Junior center fielder Nick Buss (Clinton Township, Mich./San Diego Mesa CC) hit a three-run homer as part of a six-run eighth inning as the USC Trojans rallied from a four-run deficit to earn the series sweep against the Florida International Golden Panthers with the 12-7 win on Sunday. USC completed its first three-game sweep since last season's sweep at Georgia (March 2-4).

Freshman right-hander Chris McCaffery (Hillsborough/St. Ignatius HS) came out of the bullpen and threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his collegiate debut to earn the win for the Trojans.

Buss finished with a 2-for-6 day with four RBI and an 8-for-15 performance (.533) on the weekend with two home runs and seven RBI. Senior designated hitter Mike Roskopf (Prescott, Ariz./North Carolina State) went 3-for-5 with a two-run single and two doubles while senior first baseman Derek Perren (Chatsworth/L.A. Pierce College) was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

A nice way to start the season. SC takes on San Diego State on Tuesday in San Diego.

Not a bad start to the season
The general tone of the pre-season coverage, with the exception of one silly Daily Trojan piece, has been "transitional / building year." I don't remember anyone predicting a slightly sub-.500 year for 2007, but that was the way it shook out. The focus for 2008 seems to be on general improvement, with a decent class being lined up for the 2009 season.

All in all, should be an interesting season.

I really think...
he needs to make some marked improvement this season or he will be gone.

Now, I won't call for his head like other sites would just yet, but I do know that SC has some urgency in getting back to being competitive again in baseball especially with ucla getting a lot of good pub of late. they have a pretty good team this season but one great team does not a dynasty make. but I like what I see from them, keeps the Pac-10 in the spotlight.

especially after...
...the USC women's soccer team won a national championship during Ali Khosroshahin's first season - that's a fairly competitive sport too. If UCLA has a stand-out season and SC is hovering around .500 again, it's going to require some off-season 'splaining.

Agree with you DC...
I coached one particular player on last years team and the general consensus was that he needed to improve his communication skills.

Effective teaching in baseball centers around building an identity for the team and how each players role fits within that identity or overall philosophy.

There are many people around the country getting things in order to go after that job when it opens.  There are some great west coast assistants who also have west coast recruiting connections that would do well in that job.

Hammburg (Army), Nakama (Stanford) or Bill Jones at Oklahoma State would do wonders with that program.
