Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

But now, coaching unpredictable kids as he does, he has shown an uncanny ability to consistently get their attention and get the best out of them.

Seven straight BCS appearances, seven straight seasons of at least 11 wins, and seven Pac-10 titles in a row in this upset era is just greatness at work.

Nope, sorry

Yes, Carroll can recruit nearly unlimited 5-star players to the wonderful SoCal weather and Hollywood social scene, but when has he actually outcoached an opponent?

His roster’s depth chart includes 2nd and 3rd teamers that could start nearly anywhere else, and yet how many times in the last 3 years has he blown games against 2 and 3 TD dogs – each time costing his team a shot at the MNC? Every loss is accompanied by shots of Carroll on the sideline with his wide-eyed ‘WTF is happening?’ look of cluelessness.

With the number of A-list players he’s got, it’s difficult to find any recent coach that’s done less with more.

“uncanny ability to consistently get their attention and get the best out of them”? Sure, except when he can’t.

Simers needs to get his face out of Carroll’s crotch, and look beyond the sunny confines of the USC campus to gain some perspective. Maybe he desires more team access and additional press passes. Doesn’t matter; prostrating himself to be a fluffer for Carroll isn’t something a ‘real journalist’ (whatever that is anymore) should be proud of.

Well. . . . . I'd rethink that a bit

Pete, Pete, Pete. You don’t know TJ Simers very well, do you? He dislikes Coach Pete Carroll. It’s borderline “very much” too. He didn’t care too much about former Ucla coach, Karl Dorrell either. He pretty much makes fun of and sarcastically fawns over any sports figure (men, women, and . . .dead horses even. not kidding you. especially the fans of said men, women, and dead horses. seriously).

Take what you read of TJ with a bigass grain of salt.

ParagonSC’s posting of a TJ Simers column is sarcasm squared. I mean, yeah- it sounds good EVEN to us! But trust me on this Pete- you got played. So, no need to get all worked up under the collar. Because trust me AGAIN my good man, it’s just as hard coaching 5-stars in a cosmopolitan metropolis like Los Angeles as it is coaching 3-stars under the big skies of Ruraltown, USA. Same “X’s” and “O’s”, different maturations and experiences. None more, or less, profound than the other.

I’d say our coach is doing quite well for USC and college football, in general. Yes, we could or should be on our 5th consecutive national title this year? But, no. Pete went and f_cked it all up for us. Tell us Pete, what team do you root for?

Hmmm...

I will take ANY of Pete Carroll’s teams of the past five years and stack them up against any team you chose.

ANY TIME – ANYPLACE – ANYWHERE!!

Has SC slipped up?…yes they have but put them in a play-off and I would give us a better than 80% chance of winning.

It says a lot that SC has the same amount of losses as those in the MNC yet they aren’t in the discussion, just like PSU, Texas, TT etc. For the most part, SC continues to schedule a pretty good OOC schedule without any FCS patsies (Coastal Carolina? Really)

Without numbers what else is there to go by?

JoPa has a great record but he has had some bleak years in an average Big 10 (11). Until the standards are the same across the board in regards to conference break down and schedules we will continue to be left with a system that is subjective and and driven by who screams the loudest.

As for Simers, well he got a rise out you and that is exactly what he was trying to do…welcome to the club!

OK - I got played.

Can’t say I’m familiar with his work, and if posting his tidbit was sarcasm squared, I’ll certainly take your word for it.

No one – myself included – is belittling USC’s recent numbers. What gets me is people acting like Carroll is some kind of Weis-like genius. (OK – that was uncalled for. Sorry.)
I’m a PSU grad some 30 years ago, and while we love JoePa, few of us PSU diehards couldn’t immediately state a half dozen characteristics of his that drive us crazy (e.g. over-loyal to upperclassmen, puckering up the offensive gameplan for tough road games, etc.). What we love about the guy is his ability over the years to beat teams with superior athletes, which is what most of us consider the mark of a great coach. I’m not talking recruiting and assembling a scary roster. I’m talking game-day coaching. Can you give me a game (ANY game) where the outcome was decided by Carroll actually outcoaching a guy? Is it easier to point to a game that USC lost because of Carroll’s poor in-game decisions? I’m asking because I’m genuinely curious how you serious USC folk see it.

Yes, USC and PSU are in somewhat of the same boat this year. We’re not bitching overly much, because we realize we had it in our hands, but let it slip away. Just like USC. Saying you like your chances ‘anyone, anytime, anywhere’ means nothing, because you blew your chance. You want to play for the MNC? Don’t lose. Period.

Carroll could possibly become one of the greats, but he’s not there yet. Dude can sure collect players, though.

Very much looking forward to the Rose Bowl. Good luck to both of us.

Quibble here...
Saying you like your chances ‘anyone, anytime, anywhere’ means nothing, because you blew your chance

Sorry, it does mean something…

Again, go and look and look at our OOC schedule over the years…No FCS Patsies and the guts to go into the “vaunted” SEC and smack some teams in the mouth.

Can I name any games where PC has “out-coached” another coach? Not really, and you are looking at it as a chess match…I will look at it in the eyes of Sun Tzu – every battle is won before its ever fought and to me the battle is won in the area of recruiting. There is no need to make chess moves when you can simply over match and over power your opponent because you have superior talent. It doesn’t work every time but I will take may chances more often than not.

Pete Carroll isn’t perfect but there aren’t many, if any, better…

by Paragon SC on Dec 14, 2008 5:46 PM PST up reply actions

You're kind of making my point for me

Carroll assembles superior talent to over match / over power teams, and yet seems to get outcoached by someone that’s a double digit dog every year. Granted, it’s usually only once each year, but winning those games he’s hugely favored in would wrap up all the talk each year about getting passed over. THOSE are the games that are chess matches – when the players themselves are struggling, the coach needs to step up and adapt.

Of course, PSU folk know that even WINNING every game doesn’t guarantee a thing. Since I’ve been a fan as a kid, we’ve had 4 perfect seasons get the finger from voters. That sucks much.

You’ve got a powerful program, a great history, and I’m looking forward to the game. It will give us an idea where we stand in the world of CFB.

Thanks, P SC. I’ll take Sir Simers with a huge grain of salt from here on out as suggested.

USC vs. Cal October 2004

Talent-laden teams, genius-coaching, nail-biting outcome! I could think of Orange Bowl massacre of the Sooners. And any number of bowl victories, (at the Big 10’s expense- those ones). Pete, this is not necessary, is it?

We have blown some games in the previous and this year’s season. No coach escapes that. However, I would tend to agree with your assessment that Coach Carroll might have a predilection for blowing a game we shouldn’t be losing to. He is a fine coach, by all standards and criteria. Getting almost 50 young men, and especially the 30 who’ll actually play on gameday, to be focused and ready for EVERY SINGLE GAME is quite difficult. Who did you guys lose to this year again?

That was a good Weis jab. Very good. Oh, you BigTen Weisenheimers!

C'mon, Bix -

Weis DOES give his teams a decided schematic advantage. We can all agree on that, right? Right?

Yes, Carroll’s a fine coach. He’s one helluva recruiter. You guys are having a tremendous run.

We lost to Iowa. You lost to Oregon State. Both games should have been W’s, but neither is a disgraceful loss.

OK, OK – I got played by Simers, and I’m paying the price. I appreciate you guys keeping it civil, and showing me the error of my ways.

Weis still sucks.

If most all PSU fans are like you

Because I think you’re one helluva proud PSU guy, I can just sense it- AND you’ve got a pretty civil head on your shoulders to boot then . . . . . . . . .I’m gonna almost hate it when we murderize you guys in the Rose Bowl!

Naw, just playin’. It’s gonna be a heckuva game. I’m hoping our team our team comes focused and ready. Yeah, Pete. I’m hoping THAT team shows up. The “other” team of ours???? Oye! There must be a “clinical term” for what happens to me when “those” guys show up and play football. ‘Cause I’m a C L I N I C A L L Y F _ C K E D U P P E R S O N when THEY play . . . . and lose.

Good luck, have a wonderful winter holiday, and may the better team win on Jan. 1st!
