Solomon Hill Commits to USC
Kind of strange timing, coming after the initial signing period and all, but top 100 prospect and former Arizona commit Solomon Hill is now a "solid verbal" for the Trojans. A very nice pick up considering that the Trojans lost out on Mike Moser to UCLA. This may or may not be the last recruit for USC though, as the Trojans may have anywhere from two to five scholarships for next season, but the only player left that I see SC making a push for is Renardo Sidney (and even that is iffy).
I have to say though, it is kind of a strange class. All of the players are about 6'6"-6'8" and while Noel Johnson is more of a prototypical SG, the other players are kind of hybrids with Williams playing the 4 as much as the 3 and with Hill often being described as a point-forward. It will be fun to see what Floyd is able to do with this group!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Conquest Chronicles' writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Conquest Chronicles' writers or editors.

Hill's development will be interesting
He’s one of the rawer prospects and I don’t see him contributing right away, but he has arguably the biggest upside of any commit you guys have. He can do a bit of everything and I love his bruising attitude, but it will take some quality coaching from Floyd and staff to get everything out of him before he leaves for the pros because he’s very raw.

Sidney
I keep hearing about this kid being a USC possibility, and man, I hope you guys get him. He sure seems to be a talented mope, kinda like Derrick Coleman without the drive and determination, if that’s possible. Floyd wouldn’t take a punk like this, would he?

It comes down to this
It looks like Hill wanted to watch a few ucla games and decided that he didn’t want to be held back on offense. Also he probably wanted to get better overall.

An unfounded and ridiculous comment
Hill was not offered by UCLA and we showed zero interest in him once he decommitted. He contacted us shortly after he decommitted, but we told him that we would not offer him because we were targeting Moser and had no need for another forward. He didn’t go to watch a few UCLA games and there was nothing about not wanting to be held back on offense. The jab about wanting to get better overall? Unfounded as well considering an unheralded guy like Westbrook just got taken in the top 5 of the draft and just made his first start.
You guys got yourself a nice player who should do well for you. That’s fine and it’s as simple as that. You got a good player. Don’t start making things up about how he watched a few UCLA games or that he wanted to get better overall. It’s false. You got a good player. End of story.

we?
That’s real insider stuff. I didn’t realize members of the UCLA coaching staff read the USC SB nation message boards. Congratulations Paragon, you’ve truly hit the big time. Or then again the guy is more likely just talking out of his arse.
At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.

I use the word we so you chastize me?
When in fact you have used we when referring to the Trojans. Meanwhile, you have not addressed a single comment I made. Hill was not offered by UCLA. Neither Rivals nor Scout lists him as having a UCLA offer and Scout lists that he does not have an offer. I have my own sources within the program that have confirmed he did not receive an offer either. Hill was not offered by UCLA. At no point since he decommitted were we recruiting him. Hill did not choose USC over UCLA and there was never a competition for him unlike socalnative inferred there was.
You guys got a good player. I don’t understand why there’s a need to make something up along the lines of you beating us out for him. Had we been involved with Hill maybe we would have gotten him instead of you, but it’s just as possible (and in fact more likely) that he would have still chosen USC. You say I’m the one likely talking out of my ass yet I have a pretty good track record on the SB sites of knowing what I’m talking about, including when speaking on topics related to USC. Meanwhile you did not address a single point I made.

Jersey Chaser says this!
What they do JC Nation! I am going to let all you West Coast biased, John Wooden looking, UCLA loving, Bruin blue bleeding mofos in on a little secret–UCLA will never win a national championship under Ben Howland.
That’s right, I said it. Ben Howland does not have an offensive guru on his staff, and I am openly questioning his player development ability.
Don’t give me that Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Jordan Farmar were 1st round draft picks and consistent contributors in the league stuff either. K-Love could have been drafted out of high school, Westbrook was top 5 primarily because of his family and high school coach, and Farmar really didn’t get that much better in two years at UCLA and is just now beginning to hit his stride as a basketball player. Luc Richard Mbah Moute got progressively worse during his four years, but rallied during the pre-draft process to solidify himself as a second round pick.
My point is that Ben Howland may be an defensive genius, but has fielded teams lacking any offensive ingenuity. Say what you will about Steve Lavin as a defensive coach, but he let his players play on the offensive end, and did a phenomenal job of recruiting and sending talent to the next level.
Granted, 3 Final Four appearances is very impressive and an accomplishment that should be noted. But the reality of the basketball SNAFU that took place last season with the K-Love situation, should be viewed as a tragedy by Bruin homers, a basketball sin that is unforgivable.
How is it possible that the best passing big man since the likes of Wes Unseld and Bill Walton, was an afterthought on the offensive end the entire season? Love was a once in a generation talent, that special player who can affect the game in all aspects. But during his only season at UCLA, he was relegated to a glorified garbage man with a sick outlet pass. I blame Ben Howland. I blame his innate desire to micro-manage all aspects of the offensive side, Darren Collison incessantly pounded the air out of the ball.
How does he fix it?
I say let Jrue Holiday run the point and put Collison at the shooting guard position. Holiday is a special talent, a hybrid of D-Wade and BD. He has the handle, the vision, and the defense to hold down the most important position on the floor. He has more heart than Collison, and is a proven winner. Anybody that can elevate a small private high school program like Campbell Hall into the top 25 nationally, is the real deal.
Dragovic has to play a bigger role on the offensive end for the Bruins to be effective. Big, skilled, and equipped with one of the wettest jumpers on the West Coast, Drago just needs game reps and confidence builders to find his rhythm. He’s the kind of kid that will drop 30 on you at any given time, home or away. Howland needs to believe in him.
It seems that Alfred Aboya has freed himself of the offensive shackles of the past 3 seasons at UCLA. Once laughed at and jeered for his lack of offensive skill, Aboya shut up all the haters by dropping 24 and 10 at the Garden last week. He is an example of the anti-Ben Howland type player, recruited as a garbage man and role player, but eventually develops into a more complete basketball player. This is Aboya, and expect him to shat on many a dudes head during the course of this season.
I am not here to bash Ben Howland or UCLA, but as a keen and accomplished basketball observer, I have to call it like I see it. Howlands needs to stop micro-managing his teams on offense, and let his players make plays. If not the Bruin Nation will have to suffer through that re-occuring nightmare it knows far to well, and be faced with the prospect of never hanging another National Championship banner while Ben Howland is coach.

ok...
A) I can’t confirm or deny a single point you made because you can’t either, unless you are in fact a member of the UCLA staff.
2) And when I have used the “we” I have not used it in any serious manner, let alone a reference to or insinuation of insider information.
and D) Rivals and Scout are not the be all end all of recruiting. I think one of them may even STILL say that Nick Young hasn’t signed with USC. So really, who knows?
PS- what socal native said was a throw away comment and pretty funny, even you have to admit.

I said this before and I'll say it again
He’s not as good as Stanback was (and it’s not particularly close either). I would’ve been shocked if UCLA were interested in him.
