God, that was ugly

I..uh...er...guess a win is a win right?

I guess we aren't supposed to win pretty on offense. I have no idea what to make of the offensive performance of this team.

McKnight can't hang on to the ball, Stafon bobbled a couple of punts sanchez had some control issues in the shotgunand of course...penalties continue to be a problem.

We got a gift on that first TD to PT, that ball hit the ground. The Cal TD should have stood because there was no lineman downfield. Poor Poor officiating tonight

Give the defense all the credit ...again Cal never had a chance to get anything going. I am going to have to sleep on this one a I don't know how many more time we can go to the well with our defense to win these games.

I am out tomorrow so there will be more on Monday...this is our post game thread, enjoy the rest of your weekend!

FIGHT ON!

Just that, no more.

Pretty Ugly!

I thought it looked ugly watching the game on the field, I cannot imagine how ugly it must have looked on TV. The Trojan D basically won this game, and Taylor Mays really came through with some clutch plays.

Baffling Stats

Total Offense: Cal 165 yards, USC 415 yards

USC held Cal about 237 yards below its season average up to this point in the season, and you cannot help but shake your head at the fact that USC had over 400 yards of offense. It doesn’t seem possible until…

Penalties: Cal 8 for 50 yards, USC 10 for 100 yards

You see that USC shot themselves in the foot repeatedly. It seemed like the refs were all over this game, and it seemed poorly officiated even to people in the stands. I even caught myself thinking “just let them play!” on a penalty called on Cal.

Fumbles: Cal 0, USC 4-1 lost

This is absolutely unacceptable and plays into the whole shooting yourself in the foot. those are four opportunities and plays that were completely wasted and instead went in the other teams favor. How is Sanchez going to make a play if he can’t hang on to the ball on third down? What good is having Stafon on punt return duty if he is going to bobble punts too?

I’ll post pics when I get the time tomorrow.

Cal TD

From my vantage point, it seemed that the slot WR was on the line and therefore flagged for being the illegal man down field. Must replays don’t show this far back, but the other WR was actually motioning for him to back up before the snap and that actually drew the line judge’s attention him.

by justanotherguy on Nov 8, 2008 9:52 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I saw the same thing

The wide receiver on the non-pressbox side was lined up incorrectly. I thought the call was illegal formation. But if you say the TV said it was lineman downfield, I didn’t see it.

Just saw the replay off of TIVO

If it wasn’t a lineman downfield, then it was illegal formation or illegal motion. The wide receiver and the tight-end were moving at the same time.

Anyone there tonight?

It was like a horrific accident – you didn’t want to look, but you couldn’t help but stare. The game was low scoring, especially with the big yawn in the 3rd. I couldn’t imagine the crap officiating, penalties, and poor plays of both SC and Cal.

At some point, people wanted to leave, naturally, but it wasn’t until SC’s 2nd touchdown that people actually did; a reassurance of a win, I suppose. It’s good to know that people stayed.

But still…..ugh.

The penalty on Cushing for roughing was total BS

The Griffin penalty was correct, but Cush got screwed. The whole crowd was totally pissed off after that one.

Ying and Yang

Yeah those refs got the roughing the passer call wrong but they also got the Patrick Turner catch wrong to. so i guess the universe balances itself out.

Damn you, CC!

You won. Aren’t you people supposed to now be gloating and pounding your chests, and calling us poor, miserable Cal fans names like “loser” or “choke” or something?

Our hate of you is so justified.

Go Bears!

What's with your defenders purposely trying to injure/kill Riley?

There was more than one occasion where one of your many 5-star 1st round pick freak of natures would shove/push/hit Riley and co when the ball had been let go.

In other words, Go Bears!

by royrules22 on Nov 9, 2008 7:18 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

there are two prime directives

1) Get the quarterback
2) Don’t get the penalty for a late hit

They’re still working on the second prime directive.

Correction

Cushing is working on #2. Griffin just flat out ignores it.

If there's one game throughout our football season. . .

. . . .(besides the fucla game) that Coach Carroll “gets up” for? It’s YOU GUYS AND COACH TEDFORD!

Something about you guys? Y’all play smart, intense, straight-up smash-mouth football with us. To be honest, I think your team outplays us for long stretches of our games dating back to the beginning of the Tedford//Carroll era. It’s insane Carroll’s teams have won more than Tedford’s teams in this young coaching rivalry.

So, a knock upside the helmet, a push after the whistle, a little smack talk about mamas and long-forgotten daddies? What’s wrong with all that? Brings spunk and spirit to the next play, is all.

And hey SoCal, nice game. That Alex Mack and Jordan or Cameron Cameron or Jordan whats-his-name (he’s a soph D lineman) ARE FREAKING FREAKS! They played heads up ball. What happened to Best? Syd’Quan played some good game too. Better luck next year. Oh, and BEAT OSU! PLEASSSSSSSSE! Beat the flock outta Oregon State! Gooooo Bears!

Best Football Rivalry in the Pac-10 Right now

Carroll Vs Tedford has had its moments the past couple of years from that triple overtime loss at Berkeley that eventually led the way for 2 national championships to close shaves the previous two years. I think that this has become the best pac-10 football rivalry the last decade. Both teams have remained as competitive and usually end up meeting each other when the Bears and Trojans are ranked opponents which only adds to the games importance and intensity.

wait…aren’t we supposed to be rooting for Oregon State?? I mean if they win out that means that they look pretty good, which means that dreadful loss doesn’t look so bad against a good team am i right?

Wait just one cotton-pickin' minute!

Did you read soundchaser’s “Schendenfreude Watch, 11/7/08”?

So anyways, all things being equal and all. . . . .you invoke quite conundrum. Nay, a twister of sorts perhaps.

OreState loss? = USC in Rose Bowl, no less.
OreState win out? = OreState in Rose Bowl, USC at-large BCS bowl bid.

Okay sharpie20. . . . .I’m flummoxed.

Just read CAL blog

Are you kidding when you asked if USC purposely was trying to injure Riley? If you weren’t, then I guess my answer would be that USC probably teaches their defenders to aggressively go after the ball. Everson Griffin was rightly penalized for roughing Riley. Cushing hit Longshore with his hands and his penalty was no more than the QB being pushed to the ground.

I believe that the defense is doing their best to shake up the quarterbacks. Griffin has been hitting QB’s late in more than one game this year, and has lost his starting job because of it. I don’t agree with you that there is a directive from USC coaches to purposely injure a player. There was a lot of agressive blitzing going on, and our guys were going hard for the QB, but no one was going for the knees or legs. I just think we were playing hard defense. With the exception of Griffins hit, I don’t see any validity to the accusation that the USC defense was doing anything but playing hard.

by frak on Nov 10, 2008 5:54 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, the roughing on longshore was a cheapy

the one on Riley was a penalty, but looked more like a stupid play than ‘trying to injure’.

That post on the CGB wasn't mine

I doubt that Caroll actually asked him to whack Riley. I’d actually sort of respect Caroll if it wasn’t for the fact that he wins against us.

What I am saying is that your kill the QB approach some of your players have should be discouraged. Good to know that he lost his starting job because of that

In other words, Go Bears!

You are aware that football is being played right

No one is going for the knees here. They are going for the QB, who has the ball, and they are aggressive about it. There is nothing abnormal, or dirty in the defense’s approach to how they pursue the QB.

by frak on Nov 11, 2008 10:30 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes I agree

and when that happens, the defense is called for roughing, which happened 2 times in the game. The first time was ticky tack. One event of roughing does not make a team dirty and out to “Kill the QB.” Are insinuating that any football team in the nation does not coach their defense to hit the QB when legal?

by frak on Nov 11, 2008 11:35 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not insinuating anything about coaching

I’m just saying your DBs need some damn control. And there were many cases where the penalty wasn’t called (blame the refs for their epic screwup both against SC and Cal)

In other words, Go Bears!

by royrules22 on Nov 11, 2008 12:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess we just disagree

Yes I think that we are over-aggressive. But implying that our team is out to intentionally injure opposing players is a bit of an overstatement in my opinion. The claim that Cal players were being hit seconds after the ball was thrown is ridiculous. Griffin’s hit was about a second after Riley got rid of the ball, but all the others that I saw were well under a second. Maybe you can cite the times that the QB was hit seconds after he got rid of the ball, because I sure didn’t see any.

In a nutshell I think we are over-aggressive out there, and that’s why we are the 4th most penalized team in the NCAA. Don’t call the guys dirty players because they play hard. No one wants anyone to get hurt. There are many times this season where Maualuga and others have shown concern over a downed player.
