USC Womens soccer advances to the Sweet 16

USC advanced to the third round of the NCAA Women's Soccer tournament after defeating BYU in overtime

After a 1-1 lockup held through two overtimes, the teams lined up for a penalty kick shootout to decide who would advance to next week's NCAA Third Round. BYU took the first shot against Olsen and put it away. Janessa Currier lined up next and drilled hers to keep it even. Up against Alyssa Vander Veur, Olsen dove for the ball and gathered it in to silence the crowd. Stacey Strong set up USC for the go-ahead strike and nailed it for a 2-1 advantage in the shootout. Facing her third Cougar shooter, Olsen put a stop to that attempt as well. Karter Haug knocked in her opportunity to make it a 3-1 lead, and although BYU made good on their next PK, Megan Ohai's blast to the top right corner decided the game for the Trojans with a 4-2 edge in the shootout.

It looks like USC will once again face ucla, although the bruins must first defeat San Diego in a mtach that was delayed to Monday due to the rampant outbreak of fires. Although USC has failed to beat our crosstown rivals for many years during the regular season, they beat them in the tourney last en route to a championship Good luck to the Women of Troy and fight on!

** Also, as an aside, how is it that the NCAA can hold a tournamnet in the middle of fall semester for women's soccer, but cite it as an academic issue for other sports?

Because...

because women’s soccer is a non-revenue sport so it doesn’t matter if they don’t draw a big crowd for a mid-week game.

Or am I being cynical?

Good luck to the soccer team – if I remember correctly, should we play ucla, there will be Olypmic gold medallists on both teams, which is not a claim that can be made of most NCAA women’s games.

Maybe the idea is

Women don’t need to learn.

And this would fit for the Mens’ teams too, since all soccer players are girls. [/joke]

You might be onto something

After all, you wouldn’t want those lady soccer players to be worrying their pretty little heads about physics or other non-feminine subjects. And given the propensity of some groups of male players to wearing Alice bands to keep their tresses in check, can anything be ruled out?

PS don’t tell Terry Butcher or Duncan Ferguson (served time for an on-field assault; also hospitalized thieves who broke into his house on two separate occasions), for starters ; )

Duncan Ferguson is a legend

from his uncyclopedia bio

It should be noted that at no stage has Duncan Ferguson ever been involved with or implicated in any controversies. He is basically a saint.

I’m not going to tell him otherwise, I’ll tell you that much.

ZING!

That’s some cold-blooded commentary SuperBruinMan! Cold-blooded commentary. (Hey! Looky there! The MLS Cup Soccer Championship will be played in Carson on Sunday Nov. 23! Should be a sell-out! Yup, if the New York Red Bulls and Columbus Crew don’t get all you manly men all in a tizzy for some serious FUT-BOL? Heck, I don’t know what can?)

Wanna know something weird? I’m actually going, got my tickets last week. Heyyyyyyy Nowwwww!)

"Oh, would you look at that! You see, I just checked. . . .and it's true. I'm out of nerves for you to try to get on. There'll be NO MORE talkin', feel me?" words I woke up saying coming out of a trip-ass dream the other night. -Bix

The second one is a great picture

I remember seeing that on the front page somewhere and having no idea what happened.

There are plenty of good videos of that on youtube. And here’s another one of Dida, just for fun.

Dida

How many times has that guy “almost” gotten blown the f_ck up? Nobody likes that guy. Poor son of a biscuit eater! (that’s a gnarly video SBM! the first one shows a ROCKET hitting him!)

half of Glasgow loves him for that

I had forgotten about that delayed dive when he got a pat from a Celtic fan… easily the most egregious dive taken in European soccer in the last 10 years, and that’s saying something. I’m hard pressed to think of someone more deserving of a flare to the side of the head – and I don’t like Celtic, mind.

Heaven forbid that somebody miss a class

College students miss class all the time and depending on the sport, most athletes miss a lot. Only football and basketball plays during off class hrs because they are largest revenue sports. Lets face it the bowl people are affraid of losing money and it is not gate money it’s advertising.

Hopefully USC can reprise last year’s win from the semis.

UCLA wins 1-0

USC’s goalie did well to keep it to that.

I heard they lost this morning

I would say good game to you guys, but I honestly have no idea how the game went. If anyone saw/read/heard anything then please post.

I was there and posted about it over on BN

There’s my recap of the game and a video courtesy of USCTrojans.com over there if you’re interested in how the game went.
