Schadenfreude watch, 10/1/08

Happy October, everybody!  There's about 2 months left and SC is ranked #9 so let's take a look at the chances for failure for the better ranked teams!

#1 Oklahoma handily beat their first 4 opponents.  They have 4 ranked opponents ahead of them: #5 Texas, #16 Kansas, #7 Texas Tech and #21 OK State.

#2 Alabama has already beaten the highest ranked opponent of any Top 10 team with their victory over Georgia last week.  Looking to the future, they'll be playing #13 Auburn and ...

#3 LSU.  The Tigers will also get to meet #11 Georgia in a few weeks as well as #12 Florida before then.  Earlier, they won a close game w/ then-#10 Auburn.

#4 Missouri gets to play #16 Kansas at the end of the year.  In the first game of the year, they gave up a lot of points to #20 Illinois in a victory.  Future ranked opponents include #21 OK State and...

#5 Texas.  The Longhorns have maybe the most back-loaded schedule in the Top 5, facing #1 OK, #4 Missou, #21 OK State, and #7 Texas Tech on 4 consecutive Saturdays.  And then they get #16 Kansas later.

lots of strong schedules out there, eh?

Texas needs to be careful of Colorado

Will ’bama have a letdown?

LSU will lose a game…

and I still think OU will lose to Texas in Big D

really? the ENTIRE top 5?

Consists of 2 conferences? I suppose going 0-5 against the MWC doesn’t help the Pac 10s cause, but seriously? Not a single team outside the SEC or Big 12. That is DISGUSTING

You cant argue for the Pac-10

The Pac-10 has played miserably in the 1st 5 weeks. The Big 12 and SEC didn’t meltdown in their out of conference games before heading into conference play. Right now the Pac-10 is in a pretty sorry state.

Also

every one of these teams would have to make it through a conference title game to make it to the BCS Title Game.

Oklahoma’s schedule is rather favorable. Yes, they play 4 ranked opponents, but I think Oklahoma St. will fall sooner rather than later. They have to travel to Stillwater, but that’s the only road game they have against the ranked opponents. Texas is a neutral site game and they get Kansas and Texas Tech at home. It’s stupid to try and predict the outcome of a season in college football, but I’m going to be stupid and say that when all is said and done, a 1 loss Oklahoma team is in Miami.

May i pose a question

If a won loss SEC team say Alabama (why not) a one loss Big 12 team say Oklahoma, and a one loss SC team are all sitting there at the end of the season, who gets in and who gets left out?

Waste of time discussing now. After last week, I assume nothing either way. Ask again in December if it’s still the case.

Depends

I would guess USC would be #1 in the human polls on the basis of having lost first. Then would be whichever of Alabama and Oklahoma lost first.

depends

how the rest of the sec and big 12 did. If Missouri, and texas lose 4 games a piece then its not so impressive. Same goes for the SEC. If LSU, Georgia, Florida all lose 4 games then why not put SC in the game.

To me

Leaving conference bias aside….

It depends on WHO you lose to.

If Alabama loses to LSU (top 5) and OU loses to say Mizzou ( top 5) I would have to put them above USC. For one they play a conference championship games which means one more top 10 team and only lost to a top 10 team. But like Socaljml said….pretty pointless argument, i just thought it was interesting.

Yeah

I would agree with that. However if Bama loses to vandy, and LSU loses to Miss State, then I would put USC in there.

Don't look now but

Vandy’s in the top 25.

I will say, dealing in hypotheticals, most of the regulars here are rational enough that they would probably graciously acknowledge that a one-loss SEC or Big 12 champ, and one that only loses to a top 5 team, had accomplished what USC did not and would in that case be more worthy of a spot in the big game. Now let’s see what actually happens.

That, my friend

I would wholeheartedly agree with, and something I hope would be the norm for our CC regulars.

OSU

They always get up for certain games then roll over and say rub our bellys, kind of like Henly state uni.
