Riot on 30th: non-sports related

There was a riot last night just north of Campus, on 30th st. where many students live.  A block party was thrown, and things got severely out of hand.  I was there early in the night, but fortunately, left long before it exploded into this situation.  Residents in the area took videos, which have been uploaded to youtube.com.  I don't know all of the specifics, but I wanted to bring it up, since I was there, I have friends who were there, and Its a newsworthy issue.

I'll post more when I know more, but its a very big issue, and sure caught me off guard.

On behalf of all those who appreciate violence
everywhere, I thank you for this link. I wrote a funny (I think) post about it here

BTW, this is the guttylittlebruins dude.  I feel like less of an attention-grubbing whore under this moniker, so Blackjack it will be on CC.

you call that a riot?
I  must be getting old, because I saw a bunch of college kids acting like eejits (their job) and the police showing considerable awareness of the litigation downside by not kicking their asses (their job).

Of course, it's possible that I'm biased because I graduated a week after this.

Thats not a riot
Rodney King trail riots.... now that was a riot.  My junior year at USC.  Finals were canceled.  Crazy day.

Well, It was described to me as a riot
I guess that's an overexaggeration, but that's all I had to go on.

That's no mistake on your part...
"When I was a young man, the LAPD and Sheriff's Department knew what police brutality was!"

Still, when we went to buy beer at the 3-2 market for graduation parties and had to go around Nat'l Guardsmen in a hummer with loaded weapons, that stuck in the old memory banks... unlike what I had for lunch yesterday. Not that I'm old or anything.

Had a job with the Lakers
on the day the L.A. riots broke out.  I was headed to the Laker game from campus.  My roommates told me not to go because people were being pulled out of their cars.  I brashly thought that I would be fine and went anyway.  I was wrong.  The cop car I was in back of was attacked as I drove down Normandie.  I barely made it out of that one, drove past Reginald Denny's abandoned truck, and made it on to some side streets.  I ran every red light all the way to the forum, and only had a few dents in my car from bricks being thrown.  I didn't go back to campus until the national guard arrived.  It was one crazy day.

That must have been. . . .
. . .one long ass drive! Comin' outta the hood, to get to the Wood (as in Ingle).

I was still in jr. high in Los Gatos, CA, my sister worked for Symantec in Cupertino but on THAT DAY had been helping to get Symantec in Santa Monica off the ground. She called our family, she was stuck on the on-ramp from 10 West onto 4th/5th St. Rioting was supposedly going on over on Colorado/Broadway/4th/and 5th Streets. ALL THE WAY WEST IN SANTA MONICA?

The best thing about this diary, is the "my riot/your riot" tenor or the postings. From the outside looking in (never experienced rioting here in States, abroad. . .I've seen some crazy stuff), I can't help but chuckle.

I'm surprised there isn't anyone walking around with one of those "beer-hat contraptions" in all the footage. No one's even smoking locoweed? Oh that's right, it's USC. They're hopped up on Prozac and vodka.

funny you should mention that
I didn't partake of the demon mary-jane when I was an undergrad. When I went east for grad school, I was so broke that my first year I had to live on campus (they didn't require a deposit) so I got to know a few undergrads... when you would walk around the dorms on Friday and Saturday nights, there would be clouds of smoke rolling down the hallway. You'd have thought it was Humboldt State.

funny you should mention Humboldt State
I got crazy stories from Humboldt. From Shelter Cove to Crescent City. Patrick's Point to Garberville. The only thing really happening in those neck of the woods is the thriving metropolis known as Eureka!

Fortuna, CA is the place for the KGB! (killa green bud). Patrick's Point is the place for The Purple (purple and gold double-dank death bud). Arcata had the BMX (stands for moto-cross- laymen's terms. but twisted for "mota"- spanglish for pot.

So we'd GP (guinea pig, as in sample; try-out) the KGB, cruise through Arcata higher than 10 Indians to satisfy our terminal-ache for munchies. Roll a Purple spliff. Try to get to Eureka before nightfall in order to (really try this time) count what little money we had left. End up 3 days later somehow driving with a full tank of gas, 2 cartons of cigarettes, 1L of Old Bushmill's Irish whiskey 3/4 full, 1 HUGE bag of BMX (mixed with some Northern Lights- don't even ask!), a new pair of dope sunglasses, no luggage, new rental car, all our money and credit cards. But I lost a Bix Beiderbecke album (78 sp) that I picked up at this antique store in Garberville on the way in, and my buddy was making out with a new girlfriend.

Everything made sense by Santa Rosa that night. And I kid you not, we drove on the wrong side of the Golden Gate Bridge the whole way back into San Francisco. (and we thought THE OTHER DRIVERS were driving crazy)

For guilt. For shame. I want you to know, this has been therapeutic for me. (at this point, anything other than Schedule 1 pharmaceuticals/opiates is).

And lemme tell you about the Genesis concert I went to this past October. Some of the dankest mota I've inhaled in like forever. Full on contact HELLO!

i'm thinkin' i'd really like to meet that girl in the second video.

what can i say, i dig the hot nerdy types...so much so that it transcends school rivalries.  (i assume she's an 'sc student)
