GameDay Open Thread - USC vs. Oregon
VS
SC looks to go for the sweep in the of Oregon tonight as the face the Ducks in Eugene. The Ducks almost pulled one out against ucla so they need to be taken seriously. I can't find a game preview on either ESPN or CBS Sportsline and I don't feel like writing one so you'll have to trust m that this one is important.
SC has a lot of confidence going right now with the win against ucla last Saturday at Pauley and their blow out of the Beavers on Thursday. The a had a bit of a dry patch in that game but the got it going in the 2nd half. So it should be a great game tonight. I will be around to run the thread so leave your comments or rants here. Lets see if we can keep riding the momentum.
FIGHT ON!

that's a sign...
Your words couldn't be truer DC
With Davon Jefferson fouling out, Mayo and his leg cramps, Hackett down to his last 2 fouls, and Tajuan Porter from OU (last years PAC 10 tourney MVP- man he's a quick son of a biscuit too) pushing the tempo finding his men and then he STARTS HITTING his shots (he was 0 for 9 and shooting bricks)- it wasn't looking good. We starting hitting half our free throws towards the end, fatigue setting in, nerves getting wracked. Our boys played like men towards the end. We had to go small and fast, but we just couldn't hit our outside shots. The lane just collapsed.
OJ coming back into the game in OT really saved us I think. We started to look a lot better in the 5 min of OT than we did in the last 3 minutes of regulation, what with OJ slowed by cramps and coming out with a minute left- that's when OU really poured it on. Their guys weren't missing. The crowd had our guys jacked for all the wrong reasons.
We came through though. Can you imagine if we lost? It would have been devastating with the Arizona teams coming through next week. There's no telling how a young team like ours would have responded had we lost this game. I think this game was our statement game towards how we'll play leading up until the PAC 10 tournament.
We got two in Oregon. Just like last year. But totally different. We had juniors and experience.
Both Washington State and Stanford won today. So, we keep pace with them. We'll see how UCLA does tonight. They CAN get upset. (I'm saying this not knowing how their game is going, it's on right now. But I've got my girl over and we're playing the karate game in a few minutes. nudge. nudge. wink. wink)

Long of the short of it:
Pink's done a fantastic job getting these guys to buy into his system and game adjustments. We're so friggin' athletic, some of the stuff Dwight Lewis and Mayo did last night, and the recent play of Davon Jefferson the last 3 games (he was taken out of last night's game through over-exuberance and ticky-tack fouls) has brought our team to 4 - 3 in the PAC 10 (we started out 0 - 3 remember?).
They're getting better for sure DC. Way better. Like leaps and bounds IMHO.
Mayo is seeing it. His game in the last 1 1/2 months has markedly improved. His shot selection is way better, although his PPG has dipped a little. (I think, or it just seems that way). Lewis' defense is lights out. Davon and Taj have been outstanding down low. Hackett is the "veteran" and he's always stays within the game, but his free throw shooting last night at end of reg. almost cost us. It seems OU was specifically fouling him.
We're getting better that's right. Which is scary right now. I hope we don't "peak", then "fall" before the tournament. It's still possible for a young team to do. I'm hoping with Pink's pedigree, he'll keep these guy rolling, then taper-off some- still maintaining defensive intensity and ball-control (movement and shot selection). If we go down that path of creating shots off the dribble/needlessly driving the lane like we were in early Dec.- the young men (I'm afraid) will have been reading too many of their press clippings.
They looked real good last night. Start to finish. I'll pay to see ALL THEIR REMAINING HOME GAMES and put forth the energy to do so in the coming weeks. That's how good they've become.
