Debunking some age old myths

From The Diaries. Regular Poster USCLink has challenged our crosstown rivals with their claims that USC is an inferior academic institution. I'll let the numbers speak for themselves. - Paragon SC.

Like the one that the bRuins over in Westwood have a much better school, that we are the university of second choice and that when we decimate them 66-19, its because we have lower academic standards.

Lets see what the students who attend the universities actually think:

According to collegeboard.com (you know them, they administer the SATs, ACTs, and other make or break tests that help get you into college...and don't forget that they're unbiased), 'SC's average admittance rate is 27%.  fUCLA's average admittance rate is also 27%.

Wait...we're even with them?  They aren't head and shoulders above us in every regard, as they've spent so long convincing themselves they are?  Gee, I bet they won't like these next stats either.

'SC's average SAT scores of a 1st year student:
Verbal: 620 - 710  (665)
Math:   650 - 730  (690)

fUCLA's average SAT scores for a 1st year student:
Verbal: 570 - 690  (630)
Math:   600 - 720  (660)

Hmmmmm...That is an average of 65 points higher...And again, its 'SC on top.  Looks like football is just one of many things we're better at.

Lets compare ACT scores, just to see if this trend of better students with better test scores choosing 'SC continues:

Average ACT score at 'SC:
28 - 32  (30)

Average ACT score at fUCLA:
24 - 30  (27)

That's a full three points of difference.

So, the next time one of your friends who has that other school as their alma mater takes an academic jab, you know exactly how and where to hit back.  Tell the the simple fact of the matter, that we compare favorably in multiple areas.

Don't go out looking for fights, but if someone decides to throw down the gauntlet against your entire education system while lauding their own, don't be afraid to stand up for your school, and the academic values it represents.

USNEWS sheds some interesting light.  They have the bRuins ranked 25 overall, and 'SC ranked 30.  I guess if you look hard enough, you can find a ranking that suits your purposes.

Either way, it shows that they have no clear academic advantage.  Both schools are fine campuses with awesome academics.  It just so happens that lots of people are in denial.  And we all know about the athletic advantage we enjoy.

Fight on for 'SC!
